Students Should Get More Sleep

Sleep is a very important aspect of a student’s success and health, however, many students do not get enough rest because of how early school starts, as well as sports, homework, and other activities. Students should have the choice to sleep in more because it improves their mental health, helps them perform better in school, and gives them more energy thought the day.
Getting more sleep improves students’ mental health. Studies show that they need about eight to ten hours of sleep every night, but many students get far less sleep than that. Without enough sleep, students can feel stressed, anxious, or irritated. Being constantly tired can also make it harder to control their emotions and stay positive. Allowing students to sleep in would help them be healthier mentally and physically, also allowing them to focus more during the day and learning more than if they were only half listening while very tired. Lily Wendlandt is one of these students. “I get home from practice its super late and is still have homework to do after that, so I am up late doing homework and not having enough sleep,” Wendlandt said.
More sleep gives students the energy they need for sports, jobs, and other activities. Many students balance schoolwork with extracurricular responsibilities outside of school. Lack of sleep can lead to low energy with is especially important to student-athletes. “I am a two-sport athlete, and I have school, tennis practice, then straight to volleyball practice. I need more sleep for more energy,” Alyssa Box said.
Therefore, more sleep for students is the best idea for everyone, no matter the sports or the job, everyone should have more time to sleep in.
